It’d been two weeks since Charlotte Motor Speedway’s quarter-mile hosted Legend Cars and Bandoleros after inclement weather postponed Round 3 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout. As a result, Tuesday night at America’s Home for Racing hosted 14 feature races between the third and fourth rounds of this year’s Summer Shootout.

In Rounds 1 and 2, Colt Johnson was the driver to beat in the Bandolero Division. He looked to be taking a third straight victory, but traffic got in the way and aided LaQuan McCoy who had been holding his own as he fought to stay close to Johnson’s bumper. McCoy snuck to Johnson’s inside before Johnson spun around on his own. Jack Smith was now the second-place driver but wasn’t able to attempt a clean pass on McCoy, resulting in McCoy taking home the Round 3 victory.

He repeated his Round 3 win in Round 4, but this time, McCoy held the lead without relinquishing it to Johnson. Smith would eventually pass Johnson who second and chopped a chunk of McCoy’s lead away. He ultimately ran out of time.

Huntington Beach’s Jake Bollman was in command for the majority of the Round 3 Boston Reid & CO Pro Division race. As the field challenged for positions behind him, he slowly drove away to double digit car length leads twice. Following a late race caution, Bollman led the field single file to green with two laps to go. He nearly lost any shot at winning when he over drove turn one. That allowed Alex McCollum to get to his inside and have the preferred line. Not interested in losing a race he dominated, Bollman held firm on the outside and when the pair took the checkered flag, it was Bollman victorious by four tenths of a second on the high side.

Bollman was looking to sweep the night, but in the Boston Reid & CO Round 2 Pro race, trouble struck on a restart on Lap 11. Jensen Jorgensen shoved Bollman into turn and into McCollum, resulting in several spins and fluid cleanup on the track. Ethan Norfleet inherited the lead and when the race was back underway, he had a mirror full of Garrett Gumm. By the time Cameron Bolin got to second place, Norfleet enjoyed a 10-car length lead. That lead was erased when Carson Brown spun with four laps to go. Norfleet was prepared for the bump that Bolin gave him on the restart, but couldn’t withstand the one that happened with three to go. Bolin took the lead and the checkered flag, his second Cook Out Summer Shootout win in 2023.

Breaking out the broom in the Master’s division was Mark Green. In Round 3 however, the win looked to be either going to Carl Cormier or Kevin Foisy, but a wreck during a restart with 17 laps to go included Cormier spinning and Foisy crashing into the turn two tire barriers violently. He climbed out of the car okay but his evening of racing was finished. Lee Jordan was now the leader and two restarts later, Dwayne Holder attempted the bump and run on Jordan, but spun himself out in the process. Green was now second and didn’t anticipate the restart by Jordan well, however, it didn’t take him long to be knocking on the leader’s bumper. With seven laps to go, Green took the lead and drove to his first win of 2023.

Green started Round 4 where he ended in Round 3 and didn’t look back. He survived a few restarts to sweep the night’s final Masters Division race.

Miller Performance Motorsports swept the VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro races on Tuesday, with Sean McElearney winning Round 3 and George Phillips winning Round 4. McElearney led the way in his victory whereas in Phillips’ Round 4 win, was a hard-fought battle between, McElearney, and fellow MPM teammate Trevor Wester. Wester led most of the way but in the final stages of the race lost control of the race. He and McElearney tangled with three laps to go, sending both of them high. Phillips slipped through back to second and went after McElearney, who was now leading. McElearney took the white flag as the leader, but Phillips crossed under the checkered flag the winner. Wester retained third, making it a MPM podium sweep.

The Round 3 Young Lions race didn’t go the distance as time expired, but still saw a valiant effort by Nathan Lyons to retain the lead over Jackson Denton and Max Reaves. Ultimately, Denton took advantage of Lyons’ mistake during the final restart on Lap 14, and promptly shot away. Reaves followed Denton and took second, relegating Lyons back to third where he finished when a collision on track between Cassidy Keitt  and Jayden Wagner ended the race early. Wagner came to a stop on his side and climbed out okay when the car was put back on all four wheels.

In Round 4, Denton was leading and hoping for a third win in four races in the Cook Out Summer Shootout for 2023, but Reaves’ persistence to complete a pass on him prevailed on Lap 18 when Reaves positioned his Legend Car to Denton’s inside. Just as Denton was making a pass for the lead after giving Reaves the bumper, the race was called for time for a spin. Reverting back to the previous lap completed. Reaves took home his first career Legend Car win at Summer Shootout.

Owen Zacharias has tried for many years to win at the Cook Out Summer Shootout and on Tuesday his hard work paid off. The 26-car field went green for eight laps before the first yellow flag was displayed. Zacharias fought Ben Morabito diligently but couldn’t make a pass stick until with 10 laps to go, he used a great launch off the corner to get to Morabito’s inside. Zacharias pushed him wide and secured the lead. After a restart that made turns one and two calamity corner, the race restarted single file. Morabito wasn’t able to make his faster Bandolero get around Zacharias before a race ending spin awarded Zacharias the victory in the Bojangles Round 3 Outlaws Division race.

The outside isn’t supposed to work in a Bandolero on Charlotte’s quarter-mile. Just like she did in Round 1, Alison Johnson made it work once more in the Bojangles Round 4 Outlaws race. She even had to overcome being put three-wide, and at one point four-wide, and her persistence on the outside was rewarded when she crossed the line the leader and a caution was displayed. On the restart, her car wrapped around the bottom so well that she made it look easy for her Bandolero to drive off. Hunter Morgan, who was a challenger of hers, later fell backward with an issue, giving her ample room to breathe. Second-place Killian McMann wasn’t able to catch Johnson, and she claimed her second win in four races in this year’s Cook Out Summer Shootout.

The Beginner Bandolero races were dominated once again by Bryson Nichols, who previously won in Rounds 1 and 2. Beginner Bandolero B Features were run instead of B Mains, and Taegan Knowland won in Round 3 with Carson Wise winning in Round 4.
