If you were going to win the Young Lions Championship Feature, you were going to have to survive several restarts and be good at them. Starting sixth, Keelan Harvick was up to fourth within five laps as pole sitter Ashton Williams led early over Cole Denton, before Carter McMurray took over second. Three of the five national championship contenders (Williams, Denton, and Harvick) were in the top four positions, while the other two, Ryan Zima and Rodney Dowless Jr., were towards the back half of the top 10 after the first handful of laps.

Thirteen laps clicked away before the first yellow flag, for a Neal Dulin and Ryan Zima tangling into turn three. Dulin’s day was done, but Zima was able to return to the track to keep his title hopes alive. Williams was the leader at the time of caution with Harvick in second, McMurray third, Spencer Bradshaw fourth, and Denton fifth.

Williams kept the lead through the first set of corners, leaving Harvick to race on the outside of McMurray for second. Denton moved back into fourth but couldn’t get his nose deep enough alongside Harvick to keep him on the outside.

Trouble struck the field again when two cars in front of Connor Weddell had a moment, and in reaction, Weddell turned right to avoid, clipped the rear end of a stalled car and slammed into the outside wall. He was okay but his day was over. The day for Peyton Worm also ends as he had his radiator knocked in during the incident.

Sixteen laps remained when the race resumed with Williams leading Harvick on the low side. Both slipped past McMurray, who also lost a position to Ben Morabito. Harvick made a move on Williams into turn three, and Williams went high through turn four. Harvick, now leading, put a couple car lengths quickly between himself and Williams, who was able to slot ahead of Morabito.

The yellow flew just one lap later for a spun on the backstretch, which reracked the field once again. Williams restarted outside of Harvick and stumbled in a major way and was going to precious track position on the lead but was saved when two cars spun on start. When the field was lined back up to attempt another restart with 14 laps to go, Williams got too good of a start and the yellow was quickly displayed for the restart. The third attempt, was nearly perfect for both Williams and Harvick.

The raced side by side for almost a lap an three-quarters, until Williams missed his entry into turn three and swung high, which in reaction caused Denton to swing wide. Lucky for both of them, the debris displayed the yellow once again.

The race resumed with 13 laps to go, Harvick wasted no time clearing Williams. Williams went wide again in turn one, into the third lane and lost six positions within a matter of a lap. Through all this, Dowless had made his way to knock on the door of a top five and was battling Denton for fifth. Zima had also returned to the top 10, meaning the top Young Lions Asphalt National Championship contenders were all in the top 10.

A multi-car crash drew the yellow one more time and gave the field a chance to catch their breath with eight laps to go. Harvick led the field back to green in single-file formation. Morabito hustled to stay on Harvick’s bumper and keeping his opportunity to win alive, but McMurray was giving everything he had to pass Morabito occupied. With five to go, Morabito gave Harvick a bit of a nudge into turn three. It wasn’t enough as Harvick kept is Legend Car in front as the field crossed the line with four to go.

Harvick held on to win the Asphalt Nationals Young Lions Championship Feature, and left Dominion Raceway as the unofficial 2024 INEX Young Lions Asphalt National Champion.

Five drivers started the Semi-Pro Championship Feature tied for first place with 1900 national points apiece. London McKenzie was one of those five, and he started in pole position. The other four drivers were Michael Crafton (6th), Ayden Christensen (14th), Cole Robie (17th), and Ayrton Brockhouse (26th). Each had their own level of work ahead of them if they wanted to be the INEX Semi-Pro Asphalt National Champion at the end of the day, let alone win the Semi-Pro Asphalt Nationals Championship Feature.

McKenzie quickly established his want to win both as he jumped to the lead with outside pole sitter JC Fickenscher slotting in third behind Layton Harrison. Crafton lost one spot early as Ryan Mycka looked to pass Fickenscher for third on lap three. After five laps, Brockhouse, the 2023 INEX Young Lions Asphalt National Champion, had only moved up to 22nd. Robie sat 13th in the running order and Christensen was 15th.

Up front, McKenzie followed by Harrison was pulling away from third place Chase Burgeson, who found his way around Mycka. Fickenscher had a big wiggle through turn four and was shuffled up to the second groove and fell back to 11th. The action was paused and McKenzie’s lead erased because a car on the backstretch was stalled. McKenzie rolled through turns one and two nicely, leaving Burgeson to sneak under Harrison to battle for second.

A big moment between championship contenders, Robie and Christensen, occurred with 22 laps to go. Christensen appeared to contact Robie’s Legend Car and nearly sent Christensen around. Excellent car control kept Christensen’s day from ending with a crash or spin as he gathered the car back under him. He lost several positions in the exchange.

With 19 to go, Burgeson was completely under McKenzie, taking the lead and bringing Harrison with him on the bottom. A yellow flag flew for a spun car on the frontstretch, meaning the field was reverted back to the last completed lap, handing the lead back to McKenzie. Another beneficiary of the caution was Crafton, who was able to lineup third on the inside line. He soon moved to fourth as the field climbed through the gears as McKenzie was once again in the lead.

Harrison dove low with 17 to go on McKenzie, taking the lead through three and four. Burgeson also passed McKenzie and now, Crafton was on McKenzie’s bumper for the first time all race long. Burgeson wasn’t content riding in second behind Harrison, and drove his car low into turn three. McKenzie joined him, pushing him passed Harrison. Crafton wasn’t able to stay close enough to McKenzie’s bumper to follow, allowing Harrison to slot into third.

McKenzie nudge Burgeson off turn four, upsetting the balance of the blue 22 and taking the lead with 12 to go. Harrison and McKenzie had jumped out to a decent gap when the yellow was displayed for another car stopped on the back stretch. With the field frozen, McKenzie was leading over Crafton in fourth. Behind them, 13th through 15th were the other three championship contenders, Robie, Brockhouse, and Christensen, respectively.

When the race returned to green, a quickie yellow as displayed once when Aiden McConnaughey crashed into the outside wall off turn four. Heads up driving by the field behind him kept the crash as a single-car incident. This restart with nine to go was single file. McKenzie led Harrison, Burgeson, Crafton, and Mycka to the stripe.

McKenzie led until Harrison gave him a tap from behind and drove to the bottom into turn three. One lap later, McKenzie was third with Crafton less than two car lengths behind. The fight was no longer for the Championship Feature victory, but rather defend his stake for the National Championship. With two to go, Crafton had lost contact with McKenzie’s bumper. But the wild turn of events happened on the final lap.

Burgeson made a move on Harrison as they started to turn into turn three and Harrison immediately reacted with an attempt to block. Instead, Harrison immediately spun around and crashed into the outside wall. Burgeson slowed and both McKenzie and Crafton slipped on through, with McKenzie crossing the line first. Burgeson wasn’t far behind but was penalized for causing the incident and was classified in 19th, behind Harrison’s 18th. Additional cars also crashed in turn four coming to the checkered flag.

McKenzie’s victory in the Semi-Pro Championship feature made him the highest finisher amongst the five championship contenders, and the provisional 2024 INEX Semi-Pro Asphalt National Champion, pending final points. Crafton finished second, Christensen seventh, Robie was ninth, and Brockhouse was 21st after getting mixed up in the last lap wreck.

The Masters Division Championship Feature, got off to a rough start, taking four attempts at a green flag to complete a single lap. But once the race got underway following a restart on Lap 30, Scott Moseley was the dominant car and as one of the three drivers in the National Championship points battle, things looked good as his competitors weren’t having the days they were hoping to have. Kevin Rollins entered the race with a perfect 1900 but was mired back around 13th place for most of the race. Moseley entered tied for second with Kevin Nowak with 1888 points to their names. Nowak raced most of the feature around sixth place.

Two quick yellows slowed the field yet again with 12 and 11 laps to go, erasing Moseley’s massive lead. Kyle Beattie gave it his all on the restarts against Moseley, but couldn’t muster up enough power to take over the lead from him. Someone the caution did benefit was Rollins, who moved into the top 10, but just 10th.

Moseley crossed the line in first, Nowak was fifth, and Rollins was 10th. But a technical infraction in post-race tech for Moseley stripped him of the Masters Championship Feature victory. Beattie was elevated to the winner, followed by Scott Anderson, Josh Mullins, Nowak, and Robby Faggart in the top 10. Rollins was elevated to ninth.

Unofficially, pending final points review, Rollins’ surge in the final two restarts helped him earn enough points to have a one-point clearance over Nowak and leaves Dominion Raceway as the provisional 2024 INEX Masters Asphalt Champion.

Finishing Championship Saturday under the lights was the Pro Division Legend Car Asphalt Nationals Championship Feature. The top five shuffled positions but pole sitter Jensen Jorgensen led the first two laps, but Jake Bollman politely moved him out of the way on lap three. Jorgensen fell back several spots, as Josh Hicks was following Bollman in his tire tracks.

Jacob Burns entered the race with a 33-point advantage over Jorgensen but had to race his way into the feature, finishing second in the B-Main earlier in the day. He was having to chase a finish of 15th or better to thwart off any finish Jorgensen may have, including a victory. Other championship contenders were Nick Woodall (-36), Jake Bollman (-45) and PJ Evans (-45). After five laps, Burns was where he started in 26th. While up at the front, Hicks passed Bollman for the lead.

The race’s first caution was with 28 laps to go when Andrew Patterson and Brandon White got crossed up in turn three. Both rolled away but took their Legend Cars to the pits. As the control car on the restart, Hicks fired off perfectly and put two and three car lengths between him and the battle for second place between Bollman and Mike Alcaro. Jorgensen was back to the inside line on the restart, holding station behind Jeremy Doss and ahead of Jacob Staten.

Bollman was trapped on the outside and struggled to get back to the low line as Jorgensen muscled his way past Doss to take third with 25 to go, all while Bollman had a moment sliding in the middle of turn four. One lap later, Woodall moved to fifth with Bollman still on the outside battling for eighth. Burns had moved up to 18th, slowly making his way towards the top 15.

Trouble in turn three between Tanner Jones and Cody Carlton brought the field to a slow and the bleeding for Bollman to a stop. The field doubled back up with 22 laps remaining, Hicks and Jorgensen quickly clear Alcaro, followed by Woodall one corner later. Bollman got a great restart and found his way into the top four in less than two laps. Two laps later, he gave Woodall a nudge into turn three and scooted on past.

Burns was running 18th when championship rival Jorgensen crashed exiting turn four with 16 laps to go from second place. His car came to a stop in turn one and his day over. Caught up in the debris was PJ Evans who slammed right into a tire that came off Jorgensen’s right front. Evans was running seventh at the time and the damage severely affected his car and finished the race in 17th.

The race restarted with 17 laps to go, reverting back to the last completed lap, with Hicks clearing Bollman for the lead, then Bollman clearing Woodall for second. Soon, Woodall found himself on the outside line with several cars nose to tail below him.

Like other passes before, Bollman wasted no time challenging Hicks for the lead and stuck his nose to the inside of him, and taking the lead as Jacob Burns was shuffled back to 21st. A couple laps later, he was back to 18th and moving in the right direction. Woodall however, fell back to 11th.

With five to go, Bollman was well in control with him and Hicks pulling away from third place Doss, and Burns had moved up to 16th.

No challenges were made for the lead from Hicks as Bollman crossed the line first and Burns finished 15th, with Woodall 11th. As they finished Burns unofficially bested Bollman by 13 points to be the provisional 2024 INEX Pro Asphalt Champion.

The Chargers feature saw Brody Wakefield make a last lap pass on Kaden Bradshaw to win, after several attempts to in succession trying to make a pass work. He played it smart and made the pass when the best opportunity presented itself. That opportunity just happened to take place on the final lap.

A Bandolero feature split the day’s Legend Car features, and James Monolo took the checkered flag after Penelope Carlisle led early, but spun from the lead. Monolo inherited the lead and held strong against the challenges from Tuggie Case and Eli VonPatten.
