Jackson Denton is simply on a hot streak. We in and week out he is one of the fastest UNC-Charlotte Young Lions drivers. Tuesday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Denton captured his fourth victory in the seventh round of the 2023 Cook Out Summer Shootout.

Early control of the race was held by Isaac Kitzmiller, but the caution-heavy race routinely bunched back together. Pressure was applied early by Denton against Kitzmiller, but for the first several restarts, he couldn’t prevail. The single file restart on Lap 10 was where the tide turned against Kitzmiller.

Denton looked to the inside of Kitzmiller’s Legend Car, bumped him, and took control of the race. In the next set of corners, Kitzmiller suffered and issue and dropped the back of the top 10. The race ended early due to time and a pair of spins. Denton was declared the winner, with Max Reaves in second, and London McKenzie in third.

Alex McCollum snatched the lead away from Jadyn Daniels on the opening lap of the Boston Reid & CO Pro race. He held the lead for the first 10 laps of the race, before on Lap 11, Jake Bollman got to his inside, taking the lead after stocking McCollum for several laps.

Bollman remained the leader and cruised ahead, putting several car lengths between him and the rest of the field. But that lead was erased when Cameron Bolin overcooked his entry into turn one, slamming into Nicholas Sowa. A three-lap shootout was triggered.

Bollman lost the lead after going three-wide through turns three and four to Alex McCollum, who dragged Jensen Jorgensen with him. Jorgensen then bumped McCollum to take the lead on Lap 24. On the final lap, Jorgensen attempted to back up the field and force them high but got the bumper from McCollum and off of turn four, McCollum edged ahead of Jorgensen. It served as McCollum’s second victory at SSO in 2023.

Turn two became calamity corner on Lap 18. LaQuan McCoy had just turned his car across the nose of Jack Smith drawing a caution and both were sent to the rear of the Bandits Division race on Tuesday. In turn two during the Lap 18 restart, the leaders spun triggering others to spin in avoidance. Sneaking through on the bottom was Smith, however, because Harley Johnson was ahead of Smith and avoided the wreck, he was granted the lead.

Smith wasted no time getting around Johnson on the restart, sticking his nose to the inside and driving through to the lead entering the back stretch. Smith captured the win, his second of the series, with Wyatt Coffey in second, and McCoy recovering to place third.

The 2022 Cook Out Summer Shootout Young Lions Champion, Carson Haislip, made his 2023 SSO debut in Tuesday’s Round 7 VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro race, and he left his mark. Haislip immediately commanded control. A handful of restarts were negotiated successfully, keeping his challengers swiftly behind him each time. The race was ultimately called on lap early for a caution on the final lap with time expired, granting Haislip the victory, Austin McDonald taking home second, and Trevor Wester in third.

The early stage of the Bojangles Outlaws Round 7 race was a breakaway for Ben Morabito and Killian McMann. The duo kept their cars out of harms away through a few early cautions. A spin by Owen Zacharias brought the race back under caution after a 10-lap green flag run. Morabito held the lead on the restart, but McMann bobbled in turn three and bumped by Finn Buckley, which help assist McMann's Bandolero spin around. That drew the caution and the pair were went to the rear. The race ended under the next caution with Ben Morabito the winner, Mitchell Flater in second, and Hunter Morgan in third.

There were intense battles up front during the Old Armor Beer Co. Masters race on Tuesday and aside from two cautions for cause, the division ran another clean race. Dwayne Holder had a few moments where his grasp on the lead was threatened, including a slide through turn one on a restart. Lee Jordan, still searching for his first victory of the series, had challenges all night from third place. He’d eventually lose second to Mark Green after he was shown the bumper with five laps to go. Green captured second but it was too little too late, as Holder was out to over a 15-car length lead. Holder won for the second time in 2023, Green second, and Jordan finished third.

A spirited battle at the front of the Beginner Bandolero was an exciting way to kick off the feature racing for Round 7 Tuesday night. Roman Petrino was often at the bumper and looking to the inside of Gerald White III on each restart. Petrino’s Bandolero appeared to get up to speed faster, but White had the long run. A few bobbles and a few bad exits ultimately crushed Petrino’s chances at victory over White. When Corbin Cannon spun with two laps to go, White was declared victorious with Petrino second and Tuggie Case finishing third.

Round 8 of the Cook Out Summer Shootout is Tuesday, July 18. Grandstands open at 5pm ET with streaming going live on FloRacing at 5pm ET, as well.
