Exciting, bumper-to-bumper racing is what the Cook Out Summer Shootout has provided all summer long at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Tuesday’s finale was no different, and six champions were crowned with belts for eight-straights weeks of hard work and determination.

The closest championship battle for Round 10 was between three Night Owl Companies Young Lions Division youngsters. Max Reaves entered the day three points ahead of Keelan Harvick, and Harvick had a three-point advantage over Neal Dulin. After qualifying, the six-point spread had shrunk. Harvick received three points for qualifying on pole, drawing him event with Reaves, who qualified 10th. Dulin received two points and was now four points behind Harvick and Reaves at the start of the green flag.

Disaster nearly struck for Harvick and Dulin, when during the race’s initial start, Nathan Lyons’ Legend Car and got connected with Harvick’s Legend Car as they traveled through turn one. This contact sent both up the track and and Lyons collided with Dulin’s left side, but somehow, they kept their cars pointed in the right direction. Behind them, Matthew Laprade and Bryce Sanders spun and stopped on the inside turf after the field reacted behind them.

The caution flew for Laprade and Sanders, which was a blessing for Dulin as he was set to lose multiple positions. Without a lap completed, the field was reset to their original spots, minus Laprade and Sanders to the rear. The next attempt to start the race was called off for a bad start. The third attempt was near disaster again when Lyons had to correct in the middle of turns one and two, going up the track and into Dulin’s left rear. They kept their Legend Cars pointed straight, the field scattered, Harvick pulled away, and Dulin was now fourth, and through the checking up, Reaves was fifth.

With a 15-car advantage over second-place Spencer Bradshaw, Harvick was comfortably in the lead over, with Zima in third, who Dulin was in closet pursuit. Those battles were put on pause when a caution flew on Lap 7 just after Reaves had taken fourth place from Dulin.

Zima restarted on the outside front row, and Harvick didn’t want to see him bobble, but that is what happened. His bobble allowed Reaves to pass an extra car or two with ease, because they were checking up behind Zima. As the field completed Lap 7, the top 3 were under a blanket with Dulin battling Zima for fourth. That battle transformed into him defending on the outside of Zima, after Dillon Thomas passed him on the inside.

After chasing in Bradshaw’s footsteps since the Lap 7 restart, Reaves finally found his way to the inside of him on Lap 13. Not one lap later, Reaves suffered a mechanical failure and slowed. The caution was thrown as he crept down the frontstretch and required assistance to make it to the work area. Upon inspection by his crew, there was nothing to be done. Reaves was done for the night, and ultimately his championship hopes, too.

It was down to Harvick and Dulin, who restarted first and seventh, respectively, with 11 laps remaining. One lap was completed before a single car spin brought the race to a crawl once again. Dulin had made it to fifth in that one lap, but elected to take the bottom, making him the seventh car on the restart once again. On the restart, Bradshaw sent it in a little too deep into corner entry. His car was already upset as his bumper gently tagged Harvick’s, but only Bradshaw spun in front of the field, bringing out the caution, yet again.

The next restart was single file. Harvick led Zima, Dulin, Carter McMurray and Lyons, who had previously spent time in the work area under a previous caution. Harvick got away when the race went back to green, but not without having to defend from Zima. Trouble struck yet again when Thomas’ Legend Car came to a stop with seven laps to go after colliding with LaQuan McCoy and then being hit in the rear by Samuel Macedo.

Zima put his bumper to Harvick’s bumper on the restart as the field traveled through turn one, moving Harvick up the track. Zima took the lead and Dulin passed Harvick for second all in the matter of a lap. With six laps to go, Lyons was on the inside of Harvick and as they ran, Dulin was provisional champion. Then as the field crossed the line signaling five laps to go, McMurrray moved to the inside of Harvick into turn one just as Harvick’s front bumper nudged Lyons enough to upset Lyons’ corner. McMurray slid through to third and Harvick eventually settled into fourth. But a final caution flew when Lyons spun after getting sandwiched between Ben Morabito and Laprade.

With four laps to go, Zima led Dulin into turn one as Harvick passed McMurray on the inside for third. In that moment with Dulin running second, Harvick was the points leader by one point. With two laps to go, Dulin gave Zima a polite tap-tap-tap on and it was enough to move Zima up the track. Entering turn three, Dulin took the lead but Harvick closed the gap to Zima. Dulin drove the final lap in a corner flawlessly, winning Round 10, but the championship was decided behind him.

Zima missed turn four, giving Harvick the opportunity to pass on the inside. The race cleanly to the line and the margin between was four thousandths of a second, but it was Zima crossing the line first by a hair, relegating Harvick to third. This meant Dulin was not only the Round 10 winner, but 2024 Cook Out Summer Shootout Night Owl Companies Young Lions Division Champion.

Michael Crafton entered the night 22 points ahead of London McKenzie in the VP Racing Fuels Semi-Pro championship and no matter what the results in qualifying were, a 10th place for better would lift Crafton to the championship. Crafton tested that theory, finishing eighth in the race after starting second, but struggling to stay in the top five in the later stages of the race after a near race-ending moment

A fierce battle for the lead for the majority of the feature was between pole sitter Lucas Vera and McKenzie. The duo traded the lead and bumpers many times. With eight laps to go, Vera made another move on McKenzie for the lead of the race. Vera completed the pass but not before McKenzie was able to reclaim it when the caution flew for multiple cars stopped in turn two.

McKenzie pulled away on the restart but behind him, Gunter threw a block on Vera but Vera didn’t let up and used the turf to help make the corner. Gunter shuffled up to the second line as Crafton went up the track and into the left rear of Ian Hampton. Next, Isaac Kitzmiller climbed over Crafton’s left rear, but everyone continued, albeit wounded. This moment sent Crafton falling down the running order to ninth.

Out front, McKenzie stayed ahead but barely as Vera closed in. McKenzie was declared the winner when the race when a stopped car brought the yellow out on the final lap. Crafton secured his 2024 Cook Out Summer Shootout championship by five points over McKenzie.

Jake Bollman’s summer ended exactly how he wanted it to after scoring the first three victories of the series in June, bringing home a championship. The UNC Charlotte Pro Division went green to checkers and Bollman wanted the win bad, using the bumper on pole sitter Jensen Jorgensen on the first lap. Jorgensen fell back to third with Daniel Wilk slotting into second.

Jorgensen took second back on Lap 5 and Sean McElearney and Bubba Wallace had contact entering turn three. Wallace’s wheel chattered but he saved the car from spinning out, dropping Wallace from fifth to ninth.

Bollman conceded the lead to Jorgensen on Lap 11 entering turn one, after Jorgensen gave him a shot in the previous set of corners. With eight to go, Bollman was itching to pass Jorgensen for the lead, gave him a ‘hello’ with the bumper and moved to Jorgensen’s inside down the frontstretch with seven laps to go. Not wanting to give up, Jorgensen gave it right back to Bollman into turn three. Jorgensen reclaimed the lead and won the race, but Bollman’s third place finish was more than enough to secure him his first Cook Out Summer Shootout Championship.

Pole sitter, Bryson Nichols led early in the Bojangles Outlaws Division as he looked to capture another Summer Shootout win on the summer. TJ Moon followed him early, who had a commanding 32-point lead in the standings over Owen Zacharias.

Moon would’ve had to suffer a major problem if he was to lose the championship, and he wanted another Summer Shootout victory. He was on the hunt for Nichols for the first half of the race and was greatly aided when Nichols misjudged his closing rate to a slow car. When Nichols had to check up, Moon rocketed to Nichols’ bumper. Moon then thought about taking Nichols two-wide into turn one with eight laps to go, but thought better of it.

The caution flew for a single car spin in turn two, reracking the field once more. It took several attempts to get the race back going with restarts being called off for improper starts and ending with Cole Gudmestad getting his right side door dinged by Carson Cauble as others scattered. The green flag stayed out after the field was lined up single file, with Nichols at the helm.

The time flag was displayed just as Nichols slid wide in turn three as the field worked six laps to go. Moon saw the opportunity to take the lead and moved to the inside. Side-by-side under the starters stand they drove, but Moon was clear of Nichols by turn two with five laps remaining. The race ended under caution for a single car spin in turn two, handing the win to TJ Moon for the seventh time this summer and solidifying him as the 2024 Cook Out Summer Shootout Bojangles Outlaws Division Champion. Nichols finished the race in second ahead of Jeffrey Beck.

Throughout the summer, Jack Smith had thrown everything and then some at Wyatt Coffey in his attempt to reach victory lane in the Bandits Division. Coffey started from pole but Smith nearly had him clear on the opening lap and corner, but couldn’t clear himself to go low. The yellow as displayed instantly when Taegan Knowland’s Bandolero came to a stop after hitting the turn two wall.

Smith pulled the same move on Coffey during the second attempt to start the Bandits feature, but this time he moved low in front of Coffey. As Smith led, Camden Truett and Gerald White III tangled in turns three and four, bringing out the yellow. Every ounce of effort was given by Smith to keep the lead during the next two restarts for cautions, but on Lap 7, coffey wrapped the bottom of turns one and two, passing Smith’s green Bandolero for the lead.

With 10 to go, the field was brought back together for a caution and on the restart, Smith looked low and sent it into turn 1, putting Coffey three-wide in the middle with Delaney Gray on the outside. James Monolo spun behind them but kept the car going and the race stayed green. Up front, Smith had Gray and Corbin Cannon between him and Coffey. Cannon was passed by Coffey for third with nine laps to go and one lap later, Coffey was clear of Gray.

Smith needed the next seven laps to click by rapidly and to not put a wheel wrong. But Coffey was determined to capture win number eight in this year’s Cook Out Summer Shootout as with five laps to, Coffey pointed his Bandolero to the inside of Smith down the backstretch. Side-by-side they raced through three and four, across the stripe, and into turn one with four laps to go. Coffey hugged the bottom and pulled past Smith for the final time. Coffey comfortably secured the Bandits Division Cook Out Summer Shootout Championship, with Smith taking second in the race and championship.

The Old Armor Beer Company Masters Division feature started but was ultimately called after eight laps due to weather. As a result, the 2024 Cook Out Summer Shootout Masters Division Championship contains only nine races, meaning Lee Jordan was declared the champion as he led Adam Welch by five points after nine rounds.

Benjamin Rogers won the Chargers Division race after a spirited battle with Kaite Yonchuk with pole winner Abi Johnson finishing third. Penelope Carlisle scored her very first career win in the Night Owl Companies Beginner Bandolero A Feature, after coming up short in Rounds 8 and 9, holding off challenges from Carson Wise and Ben Buzze. Traveling up from Georgia, Daylan Pennington scored a maiden victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway by winning the Night Owl Companies Beginner Bando B Feature over William Paez and Jerry Garretson.
