Championship Saturday for the 2023 Legend Car Asphalt Nationals delivered exciting racing for over 160 Legend Cars and Bandoleros. And The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway lived up to its name with fierce battles from the drop of the first green flag to the final checkered flag. When the engines were turn off for the final time, the four winners were all first-time Legend Car Asphalt Nationals champions, adding their name to the record books.

Racing began with four B Mains to finalize championship feature lineups. Wyatt Dent won the Young Lions B Main with Cole Dasenbrock, Logan Chambers, and Stephen Bazen transferring to the championship feature. In the Semi-Pro B Main, Zach Sansom score the win, followed by Cameron White, Nathan Quella, and Michael Bradshaw. Scott Anderson drove from the back to the front to win the Masters B Main, with Darrell Buckingham, Josh Ayers, and Doug Sheldon accompanying him to the championship feature. Finally, Robert Czub won the Pro B Main. Transferring to the championship feature alongside Czub were Levie Jones, Jonathan Mawhinney, and Colton Crocker.

YOUNG LIONS

Ayrton Brockhouse and Jackson Denton entered the Young Lions Championship Feature tied in points, with the top finisher taking home the INEX Young Lions Asphalt National Championship. They traded positions back and forth through the first third of the race, while Andrew Riehl led the way out front with Ashton Williams trailing behind. Williams would however pull off the track with a mechanical failure during a caution period with 11 laps completed.

When the field restarted on Lap 12, Brockhouse got the jump on Denton, who was held up by Rodney Dowless Jr. through the first set of corners. One lap later, Denton was looking to take third from Brockhouse, but the caution flew again and Brockhouse was awarded back the position, as scoring referred back to the previously scored lap. When the field restarted with 23 laps to go, Denton followed Max Reaves into Turn 1 on the outside and Brockhouse followed Riehl. Riehl retained the lead, Brockhouse settled into second but Denton was left on the outside fighting for fourth with Dowless. Hayden Wise took fifth position away from Denton as the field crossed the line, just before another caution for a spinning Kyle Bacon.

This time when the field went back green with 21 to go, they were single file. Brockhouse held onto second behind Riehl, whereas Denton was in trouble. He had been shuffled on the outside and passed by Cole Robie and had a string of cars keeping him on the outside. Denton settled into 10th place with 18 laps to go and upfront, Reaves showed Brockhouse the bumper through Turns 3 and 4, moving Brockhouse to third. He’d crossover Reaves and take second back just before the yellow was displayed.

Reaves took the lead from Riehl on the restart, but only for a lap before Riehl reclaimed control. Brockhouse was still in third and Denton gained two position, running in eighth. Two laps later, Denton had moved back into the top five, passing Keelan Harvick for fifth with 13 laps to go.

Bacon and Decker Kaylee Decker drew the caution with 23 laps completed, 12 to go. Brockhouse successfully made it to Riehl’s inside on the restart and taking control of the race, leading for the first time on Lap 24. Riehl put up a fight for second against Dowless, who had Reaves, Denton trailing behind, allowing Brockhouse to scoot away. With nine laps remaining, a single car spin on the backstretch drew the caution. On the restart, Brockhouse led Riehl, Reaves, Dowless and Denton to the green, but was put to the outside by Riehl and Reaves when they dove low into the first corner. Brockhouse was able to find a gap to slot into third as Isaac Kitzmiller took Denton and Dowless three-wide through Turn 2. Denton was back to sixth and Brockhouse had passed Riehl for second with eight laps to go.

Next time around, Riehl was in second and Brockhouse stuffed his car in a hole just ahead of fourth place Robie to stay in third and Denton had passed Kitzmiller for fifth. Brockhouse again took second with seven laps to go and with Denton found his way around Robie for fourth with six laps to go. With five laps to go, the caution flew for London McKenzie and Wyatt Dent, reracking the field once again.

Brockhouse pointed his Legend Car perfectly off of Turn 4 coming to the restart with five to go, putting then leader Reaves to the outside. Behind him, Denton did the same thing to Riehl. When they crossed the line with four to go, the top two in Young Lions Asphalt National points were running 1-2.

One more caution would have to be contested however, when Dowless went around off the front bumper of Kitzmiller after becoming detached from locking bumpers with Reaves.

Brockhouse shot ahead on the restart, taking the green with three laps to go. He’d kept Denton at bay and if he was checking his mirrors with two laps to go, he would’ve seen Riehl giving Denton a challenge entering Turn 3. That distracted Denton from going after Brockhouse for a set of corners. In a last ditch effort, Denton gave Brockhouse the bumper into Turn 3. Tire smoke escaped where they hit and Brockhouse went up the hill, but he brought Denton with him. Riehl made a look to the inside but it was Brockhouse crossing the line first by half a car length. Denton settled for third, with Robie in fourth, and Reaves finished fifth. By virtue of the win, Brockhouse left the track not only the 2023 Young Lions Legend Car Asphalt Nationals Champion, but the provisional 2023 INEX Young Lions Asphalt National Champion.

SEMI-PRO

The Semi-Pro Division also had a tie at the top of the standings. Carson Haislip, Isaiah Newcomb, and Mason Lastra all had maxed out points at 1900 each entering the 2023 Legend Car Asphalt Nationals. Haislip and Lastra started on the front row and Lastra launched very well on the initial green flag but Haislip fought back on the inside. Haislip took control as Lap 1 was completed, but Lastra was in trouble. He was stuck on the outside until Lap 5 when he was able to find a hole between Saygen Boehmer and Brendan Tracy in sixth.

With 10 laps completed, the third championship contender Newcomb was in 13th battling to advance in a swarm of Legend Cars. Lastra had moved back up to fourth, and out front, Haislip was becoming smaller and smaller in the windshields of cars behind him.

The race’s first caution flew after 14 completed laps and erased Haislip’s massive lead. Haislip maintained the lead on the restart, but this time Lastra restarted on the inside behind him. Lastra moved into second passed Stephen Brucker down the backstretch. Newcomb was able to reach ninth place three laps after the restart. Unlike the previous run, Haislip didn’t pull away from second place. Lastra was staying with a couple car lengths of his rear bumper, ready to strike, until Brucker positioned himself to Lastra’s inside and took over second. Moments later, he was drifting through Turn 1 after losing traction. He would fall all the way back to ninth.

Cameron White drew the next caution when he appeared to have slight contact with Zach Sansom. The contact put him gently into the tire barriers in Turn 1. He was pushed back and rejoined the field. The race resumed with 14 laps to go and Haislip blinked on the restart battling Chase VanHouten. This allowed Lastra to safely get to Haislip’s inside down the backstretch. Haislip drove deep into Turn 3, but shot high allowing Lastra to take over the lead. George Phillips showed Haislip his nose, indicating he wanted second, but it didn’t work. Haislip moved down in front of Phillips, securing second place.

With 12 to go, Haislip turned left to Lastra’s inside and they touched wheels entering Turn 3. Upsetting both cars equally, Lastra used the momentum of the second lane to steam ahead to keep the lead. Meanwhile behind them, Newcomb had moved up to seventh and away from a wad of Legend Cars duking it out for positions 8-13.

With 10 to go, Haislip attempted another run on the inside of Lastra and this time it stuck. With help from Phillips, Haislip led Lap 26 with Lastra settling in fourth behind Michael Crafton in third. The field would be reset again when White and Mason Nelson spun in Turn 2 with eight laps to go. Crafton looked to take Haislip and Phillips three-wide down the backstretch but backed out during the restart. Haislip secured the lead one lap later, while Lastra was still on the outside in fifth and Newcomb had joined the top runners in sixth.

MASTERS

A multi-car crash opened the Masters Division Legend Car Asphalt Nationals championship feature on Lap 1 as the field exited Turn 2. The crash was triggered when Bruce Silver’s left rear tire and Mike Holden’s right front tire touched, sending Silver instantly around on bicycling on his right-side tires. Holden slammed into the outside wall and Jeramiah Johnson crashed into Holden. Behind them Greg Erhardt ramped off the rear of Aaron Flett’s machine as the field checked up to avoid the crash ahead. All drivers climbed out of their cars okay or continued the race.

The 35-Lap event got underway on the second attempt with Robbie Woodall leading Lap 1, but Rusty Young rocketed past Woodall entering Turn 1 on Lap 2. After five laps, Young led the way, followed by Woodall, Kevin Rollins, Josh Mullins, and Bill Plemons. Further behind them, Scott Anderson was making his way through the field and had jumped up to 13th after starting 20th.

Neena Kik and Josh Ayers collided on the frontstretch as the field completed Lap 6. The contact sent Kik into the outside wall nose first, ending her day. When the field restarted it was Young and Woodall side-by-side for nearly a full lap before Young’s red Legend Car cleared Woodall, who was left to defend against Rollins to his inside. Woodall would squeeze into fourth place between Andy Hulcy and Mullins on Lap 9.

Rollins slipped up on Lap 10 through Turn 4, allowing Hulcy and Woodall to get by him. Woodall was beginning to give Hulcy some trouble when Mike Doss spun in Turn 1 off the bumper of Anderson. With 23 laps to go, Young pulled Woodall clear and Rollins looked to Hulcy’s inside. When Rollins got past, it was Mullins’ turn to send Hulcy backwards, leaving him at the mercy of Lee Jordan. A quick yellow flew, now with 22 laps to go when Chris Thompson went around in Turn 4. The restart that followed was single file and Woodall was tire track for tire track with Young. The top six separated themselves when Scott Harbison suffered an issue on the start and pulled off the track.

On Lap 15, Woodall launched well off corner exit of Turn 2 and turned to Young’s inside into Turn 3. By the start finish line, he was clear and the leader. A single car spin drew the caution with 18 laps remaining. Young reclaimed control of the race on the restart from Woodall after a quick run down the backstretch.

Lonnie Hochstetler and Lee Jordan were battling for sixth when Jordan locked up his tires entering the first corner and went straight into Hochstetler. The brought the race under the yellow flag once again with 16 laps to go. Young brought the field low as they took the green flag on the frontstretch, bumpers were knocked, and Young was still leading when the field cross the line with 15 to go. At the same time, Mullins’ front bumper tagged Rollins’ car, disrupting his traction through the corner and putting him back to fifth. Up front, Woodall dove into Turn 3 on Young’s inside and captured the lead once more. Now the race had 14 laps remaining.

Scott Anderson had made his way back up through the field and was on the bumper of fifth place Mullins with less than 12 laps remaining. Anderson accelerated well off Turn 4 and was on Mullins’ inside into Turn 1, taking fifth on Lap 25. The yellow as displayed again when Doug Sheldon, Josh Wharton, Flett and Thompson all spun and tangled in Turn 4.

Woodall didn’t skip a beat on the restart, holding Young to second place, but Anderson was giving Rollins a challenge for fourth. Rollins made the first available attach on Hulcy for third, which brought Anderson along with him, relegating Hulcy to fifth. That same lap, Anderson got around Rollins to take third place.

A second big crash occurred when Rick McNeill spun on his own exiting Turn 2. In reaction, Hochstetler spun and crashed into the outside wall and trying to avoid him, Ty Torkelson and Jeff Regier tangled. Then with no where to go, Bill Plemons slammed into Hochstetler’s right-front. All drivers were okay.

The race resumed with five laps to go. A wreck nearly happened when Hulcy was tagged in the rear by Mullins but they all kept their Legend Cars pointed in the right direction. Anderson passed Young for second as the field crossed the line with four laps remaining. With three laps to go, Anderson sucked up to the rear of Woodall’s car after his drive of Turn 2 launched him towards Turn 3. With two laps to go, Anderson was to the inside of Woodall, but the door was shut on him by Woodall, who got a run that was just good enough to leave him the leader as the field entered Turn 1 on the final lap.

Anderson was peddling his car and was sideways exiting Turn 2, giving Woodall the breathing room he needed to capture the 2023 Masters Division Legend Car Asphalt Nationals Championship victory. Young beat Anderson to the line by inches to take second, Darrell Stewart finished fourth, and Hulcy finished fifth. By virtue of starting the race, Josh Mullins secured the provisional 2023 INEX Masters Asphalt National Championship.

PRO

The first attempt to start the race was spoiled when Nick Woodall didn’t fire and sent cars scattering. On the second, the field was green for two laps before Nick Woodall and Nick Zaretzke tangled in Turn 4. Austin Thompson led through the first two restart and received a push from Jeremy Doss to clear Jacob Staten on Lap 4. Behind them was the INEX Pro Division Asphalt Nationals points championship battle between Jake Bollman and Donovan Strauss, which Bollman entered leading by only three points.

After five laps, Bollman was running two spots better than Strauss in sixth, but Strauss dispatched Brenden Ruzbarsky on Lap 6 to take over the seventh position. A multi-car crash happened on Lap 7, resulting in Branden Giannini’s Legend Car stuck on the deck lid of Gabe Sessler.

Doss flew to the lead on the restart, slotting in ahead of Thompson through the first set of corners. Bollman was stuck on the outside during the restart and watched Strauss drive by him on Lap 8. Bollman was then put three-wide between Garrett Gumm and Joel Smith. Bollman was the winner of this exchange, securing sixth place, right behind Strauss. A caution occurred when Smith collided with Jensen Jorgensen’s car in Turn 3 on Lap 10. The field lined up single file with Doss leading Thompson, Staten, Cody Hall, Strauss, and Bollman.

Bollman went to the outside down the backstretch as Hall and Staten rubbed bumpers in front of him. One circuit later, Bollman, Strauss, and Gumm were three-wide down the backstretch. As they trio rounded Turn 4, Strauss bobbled ever so slightly, causing Bollman to react and check-up. Bollman found the inside on the backstretch the following lap as Ruzbarsky held Strauss high into Turn 3. When Ruzbarsky made the pass, Bollman filled the void. To challenge Strauss for eighth place.

At the front, Thompson made a move stick to take the lead back from Doss, pulling Staten with him. The field was frozen by another caution when Jonathan Mawhinney spun on his own in Turn 2 after 14 completed laps.

Thompson held station at the front, leading Staten as Doss battled Cody Brown. Behind them, Bollman once again held a two-position advantage over Strauss. Doss had lost third to Brown but regained it a couple laps later, then Brown lost fourth to Ruzbarsky. Doss went backwards again with 15 to go when Ruzbarsky and Brown slipped to his inside, but he was able to hold off Gumm to stay in the top five. Bollman moved into seventh, putting two cars between him and Strauss as he cross the line to complete Lap 21.

The race grew more difficult for Bollman when Hall looked to his inside into Turn 3. Bollman may have been able to hold off the charge but exited wide off Turn 4. Hall drove past and Mike Alcaro drove up to his door. Bollman slipped again in Turn 4 with 13 to go, allowing the lapped car of Levie Jones and Strauss to go by. At this point, Strauss was ninth and Bollman 11th.

Thompson continued to lead with 10 laps to go by two car lengths over Staten, with Ruzbarsky and Brown in tow. Staten made a move with six laps to, peeking to the inside but thinking better of it as they traveled into Turn 1. Down the backstretch, third-place Brown pushed Staten into Turn 3, giving Staten the lead and crossing the line with five laps to go. Behind them, Hall had fallen backwards and Strauss had passed him, taking over eighth position. Suddenly, Hall and Alcaro collided sending Alcaro sliding on his roof and Hall backed into the outside wall. Both drivers exited their vehicles okay.

Five laps remained on the board with Staten leading Brown and Thompson with Ruzbarsky in fourth and Doss fifth. Strauss was eighth with Bollman in ninth. Aside from Giannini having a moment and sliding high in Turn 1 during the restart, all was clear. However, all was not clear the next time around. Thompson gave Brown a shove that resulted in Brown and Staten touching wheels, nearly sending Brown up and over but he remained on all four wheels. Garrett Gumm was braking but had no where to go and slammed right into the left rear of Staten. Brown and Staten repaired their cars in the hot work area, but Gumm’s day was done. Thompson made it through the crash but was sent to the rear before the restart as he was determined to be a part of the caution.

With the field reset, Ruzbarsky was now the leader with Doss in second, Strauss third, Bollman fourth, Robert Czub fifth, and Smith in sixth. The leaders cross under the green flag and Doss immediately looked to the inside of Ruzbarsky. Battling side by side for the majority of the lap, Ruzbarsky led the lap as the field took three laps to go. Off Turn 4, Bollman got Strauss sideways, but cut him a break and didn’t spin him out and they, too, cross the line with three laps to go.

Czub moved into third as Bollman and Strauss regrouped and Doss settled into second to reset for another attack on Ruzbarsky for the lead. Several cars spun behind the leaders and drew one final caution from the tower. Jorgensen tapped the bumper of Smith and the pair checked up. A chain reaction of hits sent Jorgensen, Sessler, and Brown around.

The way the field cross the line the previous lap, Strauss was awarded third putting Czub back to fourth and Bollman fifth. When the race resumed, Doss immediately looked to Ruzbarsky’s inside for the lead. He tried in Turn 1 and 3 but it didn’t work. Off the final corner to take the white flag, Doss stuffed his nose to the inside of Ruzbarsky. Their tires touched and Ruzbarsky went up the track. Behind them, Bollman was still behind Czub, not good enough for the national championship.

Doss took the lead with Strauss right on his bumper but he didn’t make a move. Doss crossed the line first, capturing the 2023 Pro Division Asphalt Nationals Championship and Strauss’ second place finish compared to Bollman’s fourth place finish was enough to elevate him to the provisional 2023 INEX Pro Division Asphalt National Champion. Czub finished third and Ruzbarsky held on to finish fifth.

Earlier in the day, Wyatt Coffey won a 20-lap unified Bandolero race, leading flag-to-flag. Coffey was the highest finishing Bandits driver, with Rhylee Hutchins finishing second, followed by Aspyn Lange, Addison Martinez, and Austin Steinke. Martinez was also the highest finishing Outlaws driver.
