Chasing the weather, Saturday's championship features for the 27th Legend Car Dirt Nationals were completed, with minutes to spare before rain started to fall too hard at Fayetteville Motor Speedway. When the engines fell silent, two familiar faces were in Dirt Nationals victory lane, while the other two triumphed for the first time, and signaled an end to the 2023 INEX Racing season with the year's final national championships decided.

The Young Lions Championship Feature saw the front row of Ryan Zima and Kai Johnson fire off side-by-side into the first corners, while behind them, things got interesting for Hayden Schmuhl when his hood pin failed. He had a window full of fiber glass immediately to start he race. Out front, Zima had pulled ahead and Johnson was slipping backwards. Keelan Harvick and Ayrton Brockhouse progressed to second and third. As the field worked Lap 4, Camden Watkins collided with Johnson entering Turn 1.

Watkins wasn’t able to turn his car in time before his right front rammed into Johnson’s left rear. Johnson’s car lifted off the ground and suffered race-ending damage, whereas Watkins was able to continue. Schmuhl pitted during this caution to reattach his hood and continued.

Zima slid through Turn 1 ahead of Harvick on the restart, as Isaac Kitzmiller maneuvered his grey Legend Car to the inside of them. He’d take second from Harvick, but Zima retained the lead as the field completed Lap 4. Kitzmiller didn’t let Zima get away, staying right on him rear bumper for several laps as the pair slowly pulled away from Brockhouse and Harvick. The caution flew again with 20 laps to go for Tyler Rampmeyer who spun in Turn 2. As the caution came out, Kitzmiller nudged Zima just a bit as the traversed through Turns 3 and 4.

Kitzmiller launched ahead of Zima on the restart before Zima missed the center of the corner, shooting up the track in front of Harvick before being passed by Brockhouse. The trio, all hailing from Joe Ryan Race Cars, had pulled away from Zima at the halfway mark. Three laps later, the field was frozen once more for a stopped car in Turn 3.

The night’s scariest moment occurred on the restart when Harvick moved slightly to the right entering Turn 1, moved up and hit Kitzmiller’s left rear. Kitzmiller tumbled five times as parts flew off his car and came to a rest on his side. He was okay, already removing his steering wheel as track safety workers were setting his car upright, and walked away from the accident to watch the remainder of the race in the infield. Harvick pulled his car to the pit area and would retire his car as a result of damage sustained from the accident.

When the race resumed with Brockhouse as the leader, he was followed by Zima, Watkins, Schmuhl, and Ryder Byrd. Zima yo-yoed with Brockhouse for six laps after the restart before a window of opportunity opened. Brockhouse had to correct in the center of Turns 1 and 2, allowing Zima to reach his inside on corner exit and pull away. Brockhouse didn’t give up though. With four laps to go, he entered Turn 1 directly behind Zima, making a move to his inside through the corner. He wasn’t in the best position to enter Turn 3 and had to back out, which allowed Zima to fire past. It proved to be his last charge against Zima.

The victory meant back-to-back Dirt Nationals Young Lions victories for Zima – both at Fayetteville Motor Speedway. Brockhouse held on to second, followed by Watkins, Ty Olson, and Schmuhl.

Olson didn’t have an overly exciting race, aside from spinning to avoid the race’s first caution on Lap 4. He entered the weekend as the INEX Young Lions Dirt National Championship leader by 15 points over Kyle Vanmil, but since Vanmil wasn’t present, he secured the national championship by virtue of starting the race.

Andrew Patterson plotted early control of the Semi-Pro Championship Feature, with Steven Partin close behind. Things went smooth until on Lap 4, Jadan Bowling spun by himself in Turn 4, bringing out the race’s first yellow flag.

Five laps into the race, Semi-Pro Dirt National co-points leader Evan Hendrickson, running seventh, was being chased by Tyler Garretson, who trailed him by six points entering the race. Tanner Jones, the other major contender in the race who entered tired at 1900 points with Hendrickson, was 13th.

The leaders were not pulling away from the field, as most of the top 15 were within one or two car lengths of one another. Second-place Partin was putting no shortage of pressure on Patterson for the lead when a caution came out on Lap 10 for Jared Byrd, who spun in Turn 2. During the caution, Jones pitted and his crew inspected his car. He rejoined the field before the restart.

Partin turned his car in Turn 2 to line up for corner exit, hitting the gas to get to Patterson’s inside on the restart. Patterson’s car had better traction, allowing him to scoot away. After two laps, Jones had moved from 25th to 20th, but his target, Hendrickson, was in sixth. The yellow lights came back on for Benjamin Iddings, who was stopped by the inside tire barriers in Turn 2 with 17 laps to go.

Chaos erupted on the restart, triggered when Tyler Sealey spun off the bumper of Blake Niehaus as the field approached the restart zone. Garretson saw the wreck forming and dove to the inside and gassed up, but was clipped in the right rear Sealey. Garretson back up towards the outside retaining wall, being missed by the field with the exception of Adam Zellmer, who ran into Garretson’s right side. Nikolas Preast and Nick O’Bryant collided into Sealey. Preast and Sealey suffered too much damage to continue.

The field resumed racing with 17 to go, this time single file. Same song, different verse for Patterson, who continued his lead over Partin. Despite appearing not to have as strong of a car compared to Partin, Patterson was fast enough to continue holding him off. But the national championship suffered a shakeup when Hendrickson spun from fourth place all on his own when he went too high through Turns 1 and 2 with 14 laps to go, sending him to the rear for the restart. Jones was now the points leader, running in 10th place.

Through all the cautions and restarts, Bowling had made his way back up into the top five on the restart, claiming fourth by the time he drove down the backstretch. Patterson and Partin touched as they exited turn four but each held on. For the first time in the race, Partin led a lap when he and Patterson crossed the line to complete Lap 20. Running Patterson a little higher in Turn 1, Partin was able to slip to the lead with a car length between him and Patterson. Behind him, Bowling was to Tristen Stephenson’s inside, taking third away from him into Turn 3.

The field would be reracked once more when Allen Gutierrez went around in Turn 2. Bumpers collided and cars swayed down the frontstretch during the restart. With eight laps to go, Patterson’s Legend Car found extra traction and pulled alongside Partin on the backstretch. He sent it into Turn 3, with Bowling wanting to follow. The next time around in Turn 1, Partin was on Patterson’s inside when their wheels touched. Losing control, Patterson spun around and the yellow flew.

Partin and Bowling were the top two runners with Stephenson, who won the Friday night feature, in third, followed by Dominic Chisholm in fourth. The next restart was called off for Bowling jumping the start and attempting to pass on the inside. As the caution flew, he and Partin touched and went up the track in Turn 2. Both were given their positions back. The second attempt to restart the race with seven laps to go was much cleaner. The top runners gave ample space and the race resumed with Partin putting a few car lengths between his rear bumper and Bowling’s rear bumper, but by the time they completed the lap, Bowling had closed the gap.

Bowling moved to Partin’s inside down the backstretch with six laps to go, taking the lead. He didn’t lead the lap though, because Partin got into the back of Bowling, nearly spinning him off the exit of Turn 4. Bowling slotted into fourth behind Stephenson and Chisholm. Chisholm missed Turn 1 entry, allowing Bowling by with four laps to go. With all the excitement up front, Jones had moved up to fifth place and Hendrickson had made his way back up to ninth. While running fifth, Jones was the championship leader but he spun after he was hit just hard enough from behind by Niehaus in Turn 2 with three laps to go. With Jones dropping to the tail, Hendrickson was now the provisional champion based on the running order.

Bowling moved back into second on the restart, bringing Chisholm with him past Stephenson. Partin had Bowling all over his back bumper with two laps to go, even getting Partin a little sideways entering Turn 3. They touched in Turn 4, but Partin came out ahead and took the white flag. Bowling made lunge for the lead, diamonding Turns 1 and 2, and looked to take the lead when suddenly he spun off the left front of Partin towards the outside wall. Partin was spun off the nose of Chisholm and Stephenson spun trying to avoid all three of them. Partin and Bowling were both done for the race, and Stephenson was sent to the rear for being involved with the caution.

A one lap shootout would determine the winner. Coming to green, Chisholm was the leader, followed by Patterson, Hendrickson, Colton Friese, Garretson, and Byrd. Chisholm held off Patterson through four corners, Patterson spun in Turn 4, and Hendrickson crossed the line second followed by Byrd, Garretson, Friese, and Jones. During post-race tech inspection, Chisholm was disqualified. This elevated Hendrickson to the 2023 Legend Car Dirt Nationals Semi-Pro Champion and secured him a perfect 2023 points season, taking home the 2023 INEX Semi-Pro Dirt National Championship, too.

Seth Kearchner started from pole in the Masters Division Championship Feature, but Ronnie Niehaus led Lap 1. Glenn Mitchell crossed the line third, Chad Groves fourth, and Michael King in fifth. Things got real exciting out the front of Mitchell’s windshield on Lap 2, Turn 1, when Kearchner slid right into the side of Niehaus. Niehaus went around, Mitchell ramped over Kearchner’s wheels and King spun in avoidance.

Mitchell was granted the lead followed by Groves, Robert Stough, and Shaun Abney. The accident didn’t seem to affect Mitchell’s Legend Car as the rocketed ahead on the restart. A slow car forced Mitchell to go high in Turn 1 to pass him on Lap 7. His momentum tanked and lead wiped away. Groves drove around on the inside and led the lap. His lead wasn’t to be a long one, as Mitchell took advantage of Grove’s correction in Turn 2 one lap later. With Mitchell back out front, Groves hustled to keep up with him.

More lapped traffic stalled Mitchell’s charge. At the same time, Richardson had caught the tail of Groves. A caution flew on Lap 13 and the field was reset. Mitchell shot out of a cannon on the restart, experiencing little pressure from his competitors into the first corner. Groves quickly sucked back up to the bumper of Mitchell. He poked his nose to the inside of Mitchell on Lap 15 and stuffed his car into Turn 3. Mitchell yielded the position to redirect his attack. Groves led the lap and held on for only one more lap, because Mitchell took advantage of his drive off Turn 4 to slide in front of Groves 14 laps to go.

Mitchell flipped on the afterburners and took off, leaving five cars under a blanket to fight for second. Groves led Richardson, Friese, Stough, and Scott Neighbors in the battle for second. Richardson took second place with seven laps remaining from Groves, which proved crucial when Mitchell was slowed once again by a slow car.

Richardson rapidly made up time, taking Mitchell and the slow car three-wide into Turn 3 with five laps to go. He couldn’t make the outside work, falling back behind Mitchell before the flag stand. Unlike before, Mitchell didn’t drive away. For the final four laps, he had a mirror full of Richardson, but in the end, he was strong enough to defend him off, claiming his first Legend Car Dirt Nationals title, and officially wrapped up a perfect season, winning the 2023 INEX Masters Dirt National Championship, his second straight national championship.

Jake Tretow tried to shut Landen Lewis down from the start of the Pro Division Championship Feature, but it didn’t work. They touched, upsetting Tretow’s car, and knocked him back to fourth. Lewis, meanwhile, drove ahead with Ryan Shabram and Donovan Jackson in tow.

After two laps, championship points leader Preston Martin had fallen three spots after starting fifth. He entered the race 12 points ahead of Michael Weber, but Weber was 11th, holding station from where he started.

On Lap 4, Weber was spun following contact with Jacob Owens. Alex Braseth was an innocent victim in the accident, colliding with Owens’ car and losing his right front wheel. Aydan Saunders and Michael Racine also were involved, both in efforts to try and avoid the other three. Weber and Saunders continued, but Racine, Braseth, and Owens would all be done for the race.

Lewis wrapped the corner to pull away from Shabram on the restart but a yellow soon came out on Lap 6 for a pair of drivers spun around at opposite ends of the race track. During the restart, Lewis had a much better start, clearing Shabram before Turn 1. His charge forward was once again halted when Dillon Spain spun in Turn 3 with eight laps completed.

Rinse and repeat for Lewis on the restart, taking control before Turn 1. Jackson found his way around Shabram on Lap 9, setting his sights on the black no. 13 of Lewis.

After 10 laps, championship contender Jordan Miklas was running eighth ahead of Martin in 11th. That wasn’t enough to clear his points gap however. Weber was running directly behind Martin in 12th.

At halfway, Jackson had shaved off a couple car lengths to Lewis and was still closing. Ahead of them was a slow car, but it didn’t play a factor as Lewis and Jackson both swung around with ease. As Jackson inched closer to Lewis, the battle for third involved the other Lewis, Jackson Lewis, chasing down Chase Singletary. Martin had gained one position, moving up to 10th and Weber had followed him sitting in 11th. Miklas was stuck in seventh unable to find a way forward as Braseth and Shabram battled for fifth with only 10 laps remaining.

As Landen Lewis worked Lap 25, he had to negotiate his way around Weber. It wasn’t an ideal position to pass Weber, but Lewis got around and kept Donovan Jackson at bay. With less than 3 laps to go, Jackson turned up the heat on Lewis, putting all the pressure he could on him. He stuck half a car length to Lewis’ inside in Turn 2 with two laps to go, but backed out to try again.

On the final lap, Jackson appeared to be all over the back bumper of Lewis entering Turn 1. When he got his nose on the inside of Lewis, he didn’t concede this time. Lewis slid into Turn 3 ahead and went up the track just a bit while Jackson wrapped the bottom. The pair were side-by-side at the line, with Lewis edging Jackson for the win by half a car length to win his third Legend Car Dirt Nationals Championship Feature in four years.

For the national championship, Martin’s seventh-place finish compared to Miklas’ sixth and Weber’s 13th was enough to clinch him the 2023 INEX Pro Dirt National Championship.

The 2024 INEX Racing season opens on December 2 with the Silver State Road Course Series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Outfield Road Course, with the official 2024 kickoff happening in February at Winter Nationals in Florida.
