Friday at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was jammed full of fast pace Legend Car action. Day two at for the 2023 Asphalt Nationals hosted a single round of practice, qualifying, heat races, and four Race of Champions presented by MPI races.
In qualifying, Austin Thompson (Pro), Robbie Woodall (Masters), Carson Haislip (Semi-Pro) Ashton Williams (Young Lions) and Wyatt Coffey (Bandoleros) were the top qualifiers during the five-lap session.
A single heat race was held for the unified Bandolero race, which was won by Wyatt Coffey. Young Lions heat race winners were Ashton Williams, Max Reaves, Kai Johnson, and Andrew Riehl. In the Semi-Pro Division, Carson Haislip, Mason Lastra, Alex Roe, and Brendan Tracy were heat race winners.
Robbie Woodall, Kevin Rollins, Rusty Young, and Lonnie Hochstetler were victorious in the Masters Division heat race, with Austin Thompson, Jacob Staten, Jeremy Doss, and Cody Hall winning their respective Pro Division heat races.
Immediately following the conclusion of heat races was the Young Lions Race of Champions presented by MPI race. The race got off to a slow start with two back-to-back cautions, both involving Jackson Denton and Ayrton Brockhouse. The first incident occurred just after the start of Lap 2 when Denton collided with Brockhouse’s nose, sending Denton around. The second was due to Denton shoving Brockhouse through the first corner. The contact sent him around, and collected the innocent bystander, Wyatt Dent.
Both are tied at the top of the Young Lions Asphalt National championship points standings, with Saturday’s championship feature deciding the 2023 champion. Both raced hard for several laps, crossing each other over and using their bumpers, giving the audience a prelude for what to expect during the championship feature.
Up front, Harvick took the lead during the Lap 4 restart and never looked back. Riehl was able to mount a charge, but the pace wasn’t quick enough. Harvick would hold him off by three-tenths of a second. Following Riehl in third was Denton, Kyle Bacon finished fourth, and in fifth was Brockhouse.
Brendan Tracy walked away with the Semi-Pro Race of Champions victory. The most compelling battle of the race was between Austin MacDonald and Michael Crafton. For much of the race, the pair were together. MacDonald made the initial pass on Crafton on Lap 11, but Crafton returned the favor, retaking third. MacDonald looked several times to get back around Crafton, but wasn’t able to make a pass stick until the final set of corners on the white flag. Following Tracy in second was Parker Traves, then MacDonald, Crafton, and Isaiah Newcomb.
In the Masters Race of Champions presented by MPI race, Robbie Woodall lead early after keeping Kevin Rollins at bay on his outside. Woodall scooted away as Lee Jordan and Lonnie Hochstetler mixed it up with Rollins behind him. By Lap 5, Doug Stevens, who started last, was up to fifth place. A few laps later, Hochstetler, Bill Plemons, and Stevens were three-wide, resulting in Plemons taking over second, Plemons moved to third, and Hochstetler moved back to fourth.
Plemons and Stevens marched towards Woodall, but it was Stevens who caught him after passing Plemons on Lap 14. Stevens quickly chopped the lead down and took control of the race with four laps to go. Stevens won by nearly 1.3 seconds over Woodall, Plemons, Hochstetler, and Rollins.
Georgia drivers Cody Hall and Donovan Strauss were at the top early of Pro Race of Champions presented by MPI race early with Hall getting passed by Strauss on Lap 4. Branden Giannini was in second for a while before falling back to third and slowing on the frontstretch and pulling off the track. He slowed so much it drew a caution. During the restart, Strauss pounced at the restart line to regain easy control. Hall nearly spun off the front of Jonathan Mawhinney’s bumper, but kept the car pointed straight. Strauss wasn’t contested for the lead and took home a Race of Champions victory for the second straight year. Hall was second, with Jake Bollman in third, Mawhinney in fourth, and Kyle Lang in fifth.
For their efforts, Strauss, Stevens, Tracy, and Harvick all were gifted a new steering wheel, curtesy of MPI.
