Close championships were the theme for this year’s Nashville Spring Series presented by MPI. Three rounds of racing for each division didn’t disappoint as all divisions had their mix of consistency and chaos to help keep the championship battles close Three of six divisions were won by a Tennessee native, including the Semi-Pro division, where the top three in points all hail from "The Volunteer State."
One of those Tennessee champions was Kevin Rollins, who used his wealth of experience not only behind the wheel of a Legend Car to keep Wayne Grubb and Scott Moseley at bay, but also his countless number of laps at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway to his advantage.
Similarly, to Round 1 on Friday, Rollins didn’t outright drive away from his competition, but rather managed a comfortable gap back to second place in both features through several restarts and maneuvering through lapped traffic. He won Rounds 2 and 3 on Saturday, but had he slipped up or suffered an issue, his ultimate 15-point championship margin over Moseley would’ve quickly been erased, along with his championship.
The Masters Division produced consistent Legend Car competition at the front of the field. Grubb crossed the finish line second in all three events, but was suffered a disqualification during Friday’s Round 1 race, elevating Moseley to second. Moseley finished third in Rounds 2 and 3. Their consistency only underscored Rollins’ management of each round, and ultimately lifted him to the 2024 championship, giving him back-to-back titles in the Nashville Spring Series. Moseley finished second in points with Giles Martin claiming third.
Late-race restarts kept Michael Crafton out of victory lane in Friday’s Semi-Pro Feature, but he countered with a sweep of Saturday’s two rounds. His third place, coupled with the two victories, was enough to make his point total six more then Dylan Faulkner, who won on Friday and finished second and fourth on Saturday.
Crafton dominated the Round 2 feature and didn't relinquish control through late-race restarts to Faulkner. The third round was more of a challenge. At one point, he was shoved out of the lead and stuck on the outside. A couple of cautions and restarts later, he successfully swooped to the inside of Faulkner to retake the lead on Lap 14. This time, he slowly yarded the competition as they battled for second.
Crafton, who also won the 2023 Nashville Spring Series Semi-Pro Division Championship, and Faulkner were joined on the championship podium by Bradley Swift, making it a Tennessee-sweep in the Semi-Pro Division's top three finishers.
There was more of a spirited battle for second in the Pro Division than for the championship. Alex McCollum survived the chaotic Round 1 race on Friday to finish fourth, before starting from pole position for both features on Saturday and going on to win.
He didn’t lead most of Round 2, but his victory was aided by an incident on track. McCollum made a move on leader Jensen Jorgensen entering Turn 3 on Lap 23. Jorgensen was then bumped and spun around by Nick Woodall. They are both sent to the rear and finished 12th and 10th, respectively. McCollum led the field back to green, but second-place, Jonathan Taylor, was unable to position his Legend Car to contest McCollum for the victory.
In Round 3, McCollum checked out on the field. While Jorgensen was cutting the lead down in the closing laps, it wasn’t at a fast-enough pace to reach McCollum. Twenty-three points was the difference between McCollum and second-place Ethan Nascimento, but from Nascimento to seventh-place Jorgensen, the difference was only nine points when the points were all tallied up after three features.
McCollum joined Rollins and Crafton as back-to-back champions of the Nashville Spring Series. And all three were joined by Landon Thrasher, who captured his second-straight Bandits title in the event. His championship in 2024 was more difficult compared to 2023, when he swept all features. Thrasher scored the victory in Round 1, then finished eighth in Round 2, and second in Round 3. What made his championship difficult, was that he started from the rear in both races Saturday after failing to post any qualifying times.
He was aided by several restarts, using his speed and experience at Nashville Fairgrounds to his benefit. The competition at the front of the Bandits field was fierce as 13 different drivers finished inside the top six across the three Bandit Features. Thrasher was able to edge Jack Smith for the championship by 12 points. Smith finished the series with a fourth and two fifths. Third-place Jaxon Burnett finished third twice and 14th, 21 points behind Thrasher.
One of the more unique championships in recent memory was in this year's Bandolero Outlaws Division, as co-Championships were awarded to Colt Johnson and Owen Zacharias.
Both scored 291 points and the first tiebreaker was most 100-point wins, which they each score one win. The next tiebreaker was most 97-point finishes. Both drivers had one 97-point finish. They each had an equal points percentage and had also had a 100% top five finish rate, as Johnson and Zacharias each scored a victory, a second, and a third.
With no other tiebreaker scenarios in place, per INEX rules, Johnson and Zacharias will share the 2024 Nashville Spring Series Outlaws Division Championship title.
Finishing third in points was TJ Moon, who like Thrasher, did not post a time in qualifying on Saturday after winning Friday’s first round feature. This meant he’d have to start from the rear in both events. He made his way all the way up to the lead to battle with Johnson in the closing laps of Round 2. His race came to a sudden stop when exiting Turn 2 side-by-side with Johnson, Moon slammed into the wall, relegating him to a 11th place finish.
In the third round, Moon finished second, running out of time to give Zacharias a challenge.
Strong qualifying and three Top 3 finishes meant that Colorado’s Trayc Walker-Scott became the 2024 Young Lions Champion at the Nashville Spring Series. He qualified fifth, second, and third, and finished the three rounds in third, second, and second. He is the only champion at this year’s Spring Series not to take home a feature victory.
He avoided trouble and remained up front through a wild Friday feature, and restart heavy Saturday features, despite each having long green flag stretches.
Second-place Keelan Harvick won on Friday and briefly took the lead in Round 2 before ultimately finishing third. In the third and final feature, he was shuffled backwards early and couldn’t navigate his way into the top five and finished sixth, and eight points shy of the championship.
Nathan Lyons ended the series in third-place, 15 points behind Walker-Scott after a second-place finish on Friday and a pair of fifths on Saturday.
Keeton Harris walked away with the Round 2 Chargers victory, inheriting the lead after Landon Cordell and Samuel Macedo tangled. Round 3 was won by Macedo, who once again had to battle Cordell for the entirety of the feature. Chase Bohanon walked away with both of Saturday’s Beginner Bandolero victories after thrilling battles with Corbin Cannon, as both attacked the corners differently in their Bandos.
For gaining the most combined positions from their original starting spot in all three features, Bentley Thompson (Bandits), TJ Moon (Outlaws), LaQuan McCoy (Young Lions), Dylan Faulkner (Semi-Pro), Darrell Stewart (Masters), and Ethan Nascimento (Pro) all receiving the Up on the Wheel Awards from MPI.
