The second day of INEX Spring Nationals from Veterans Motorplex at the Rim replicated the first day of racing action. Wednesday witnessed five drivers repeat from Tuesday, including Kevin Rollins and Landon Thrasher who extended their points lead over their competition. Impressive drives and performances throughout the fields provided viewers with excellent action.
Maybe the most exciting race of the day was the Young Lions feature. TJ Moon started on pole but it was Tuesday’s winner, Spencer Bradshaw, who was the early leader. He brought his 860 Motorsports teammate, Ben Morabito, with him to second and the pair began their duel. Bradshaw was quicker early but as the laps clicked away, Morabito appeared to be the overall quicker Legend Car. Morabito even had a moment where he saved himself and Bradshaw from wrecking.
The race went green through to Lap 19, when a single car spun in Turn 2. As the leader, Bradshaw chose the outside with Morabito having to go to the inside, as only the leader had the option to choose. Race officials called Morabito for jumping the start and penalized him a row. This put Case James on the front row below Bradshaw, who maintained his lead during the restart, but a quick caution with five laps to go once again reset the field. Bradshaw once again chose the outside, but it was James who got the better restart through the opening turns. There was once again a near moment with Bradshaw and Morabito, when Bradshaw saved it. But this moment allowed James to scoot away and capture the Day 2 Young Lions feature victory.
Much like Tuesday, the Wednesday Pro Division feature went green to checkers. Pole winner Joel Smith battled Michael Crafton for the opening lap, being fully clear on Lap 2. The top four were so evenly matched on speed and experience, that they didn’t put a step wrong. Smith did eventually put some distance between him and Crafton, but Crafton had Jackson Lewis and Jacob Staten close in tow. It was Smith’s day as he drove to capture the second round Pro Division victory of the week followed by Crafton, Lewis, and Staten.
Lessons were learned and adjustments made by Brexton Busch, who finished second on Tuesday in the Round 1 Bandits feature to Gerald White III. On Wednesday, the pair put on an opening lap battle that was difficult to look away from. Ultimately, after crossing each other over, Busch took control. It was however, paused when a single car came to a stop in Turn 4. When the race resumed, Busch remained the leader with White close behind. While Busch and White pulled away, the battle for fourth was hotly contested between Isaac Brown, Maverick Bradshaw, and Wesley Baumeister. In the end, Baumeister was able to secure fourth with Bradshaw in fifth and Brown settling for sixth. In the final laps, Busch yarded White, winning the Day 2 Bandolero Bandits feature.
A single caution paused the Semi-Pro feature Wednesday on Lap 4, in what was otherwise a battle filled 25 laps. Cole Denton led from pole early, but Hunter Jordan snuck into the lead, leaving Denton with several laps to figure out a way around. There were a few instances where Denton came very close to Jordan’s bumper, but wasn’t able force a misstep or generate a run strong enough to make a move. Jordan went on to win with Denton settling for second ahead of Bradley Swift, Trent Dillard and Jesse Martinez.
Veterans Motorplex at the Rim belonged to Landon Thrasher in the Outlaws Division, backing up his Tuesday victory with a Wednesday one, too. Harley Johnson gave him a few fits, including having to reclaim the lead and overcoming Johnson’s strength on the outside. Once firmly in the lead position, Thrasher distanced his Bandolero from Johnson’s. A late caution gave life to the rest of the field. Thrasher once again chose the inside giving Johnson the outside. It was a good start for Johnson, but not enough for what he really needed to get around Thrasher. They crossed under the checkered flag tail to nose, with Thrasher capturing the victory.
A single car spin on Lap 3 of the Masters Division feature proved to the first of two cautions of the race, which was dominated by Kevin Rollins. He and Darrell Stewart drove away from third, with Rollins driving away. The real battle was for third. Local driver, Wayne Grubb, was searching for a way around Wisconsin native Art Hahn. Grubb showed his bumper, but Hahn wouldn’t budge. It took over 10 laps for Grubb to finally muscle his way around, before Giles Martin was able to pass him. The second yellow flag was flown with 10 laps to go. Rollins’ lead was erased and Stewart gave it his all on the outside during the ensuing restart. Like before, he just didn’t have enough to take over the top spot. Rollins won with Stewart in third, followed by Grubb, Hahn, and Matt Hillhouse.
The Beginner Bandolero feature was once again a duel between Jase Riedner and Jacob Hassey. Riedner led most of the way, but had a mirror full of Hassey. On the final lap, Hassey lunged for the win and the two Bandoleros touched. Both drivers made miraculous saves with neither hitting the wall, and managing to keep both pointed straight. Riedner carried enough momentum to cross the line first over Hassey, having a clean sweep of the Veterans Motorplex Beginner Bandolero features.
Bryson Carlbert once again was victorious in the Chargers Division Wednesday. He earned a comfortable lead, which was washed away when a single car spin slowed the field. Cole Gudmestad gave his best attempt to make the outside work on the following restart, but couldn’t get past Carlbert and settled for second.
After two rounds, Spencer Bradshaw leads Ben Morabito and Case James by six points and TJ Moon by nine points in the Young Lions Division. Hunter Jordan's perfect 200 points is 15 better than second place Cole Denton and 18 better than Trent Dillard. The Pro Division has a tie at 194 points each to Michael Crafton and Joel Smith. Jacob Staten sits three behind them. Kevin Rollins and Darrell Stewart finished first and second, respectively, in the first two Masters Division rounds and now sit at 200 and 194 points. Trailing by 12 points is Wayne Grubb. Gerald White III and Brexton Busch each have 197 points and Wesley Baumeister 12 points back in the Bandits Division. And finally, Landon Thrasher has a nine point cushion to Rylan Speight and 15 to Harley Johnson for the Outlaws title.
